To the modern eye it looks like a horrible blood bath and a tragedy losing all those people and many were heroes but the Norse belief it was more honorable to die in battle than die peacefully in your sleep. This was there reward for a death in battle they would be taken by the Valkiries norse angels who took the souls of the fallen in battle to Valhalla the norse heaven.
The Norse and christian heaven stories are similar but in the Christians believe the angels take the good there and the Norse believe only fallen heroes who die in battle go there so prosumable the rest
